Description

The Republic of Lombardy, a small but populous and influential state on the foot of the Alps and the north of the Italian peninsula, situated in the fertile Po-valley.

(This used to be Padania, together with Emilia and Romagna, but I decided to split them up into separate states, considering the scenario and the cultural differences between them)

The History

Lombardy formed after the dissolution of Italy, which fell apart into numerous small states after the European Wars of Independence. The territorial plans for the Lombardian state allowed several neigbouring countries (such as Alemannie and Österreich) to annex parts of the original Lombardian region within Italy, which is still a sensitive topic for the Lombardians in international discussions and fuels the existence of many irredentist nationalist groups within the country.

International Relations

Lombardy's relations with its neighbours are difficult at times, especially with its larger Germanic neighbours in the north, Alemannia and Austria, which are by many Lombardians seen as occupants and the ones who are responsible for the diminishing of the Lombardian state (even though Lombardy's economy and international influence are bigger than that of any other former-Italian state), in addition to having annexed vast parts of the wished for Lombardian state and preventing Padanian unity (Lombardy wished to unite with Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and the Veneto-Republic to form a Padanian state, ruled by Lombardy). Even though the political relation with Alemannia and Austria is good, mainly resulting from Lombardy's dependence on these countries for remaining a major regional power, as well as the fact that these countries form the bridge between Lombardy and northern Europe, amongst the population there still remain strong anti-Alemannian and in particular anti-Austrian sentiments.

Instead, Lombardy's relationship with its Romanic neighbours is a lot better. Cultural ties provide for a good relationships with Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna, and the three together from the Padanian Union, which also frequently cooperates with Austria's Veneto Republic. The countries in the Padanian Union are involved in a wide range of cooperative projects with one another, including international ecological parks situated on both sides of the border, extensive international public transport, joint management of the rivers that flow through both countries and even student exchange projects. The countries protect minorities of one another within their borders by giving them education and public services in their languages. The fact that Piedmont has a good relationship with with Alemannia and Austria and has historically supported these countries, also in their conquests of its Padanian neighbours, is currently no point of tension between Piedmont and the other Padanian countries, including Lombardy.

Cities and the states

Squares indicate cities with populations over half a million, big circles indicate cities with a population from 100 000 to half a million and small circles indicate cities with a population from 50 000 to 100 000. Red cities are capitals of provinces and districts. Bold city-names are capitals of districts. The biggest city and capital is Milan. Lombardy is divided up into various states, some with separate provinces.

The states are listed as follows:

1. Varés (Còmm)
2. Còmm (Còmm)
3. Lècch (Còmm)
4. Munscia  (Milan)
5. Milan (Milan)
6. Lòd (Milan)
7. Pavìa
8. Carmùna
9. Berghèm
10. Brèsa

Since I do not speak Lombardian, I tried to make the names for the regions and cities as realistic as possible, but please correct me if I made any mistakes. If you have any questions, I'd love to answer them.

I like to hear what you think. :) (Smile)
